Zentis Craftsmanship: Kintsugi

Experiencing sustainability through a traditional craft

Take a glimpse into the world of artisans with ‘Zentis Craftsmanship’.

The sixth edition of the event will be held on July 12 (Fri.), featuring the Japanese art of kintsugi, also known as the art of precious scars. The traditional craft of mending broken ceramics with lacquer and gold is a technique that epitomizes the Japanese spirit of ‘mottainai,’ – the culture of respecting resources and their value – that has been drawing attention in recent years, along with the rise of global interest in sustainability.

In this workshop welcoming Takehito Kobayashi from gallery and cafe ‘wad’ for the third time, guests will receive a lecture on the history and technique of kintsugi, followed by a hands-on experience with their own broken vessels.

About ‘Zentis Craftsmanship’

‘Zentis Craftsmanship’ is a series of events focusing on providing guests with opportunities to learn firsthand about local crafts and various skills. Past events include a workshop by Tokyo-based coffee roaster and artisan on how to hand-roast and hand-drip coffee from fresh beans, and a workshop on creating flower arrangements using flowers that were otherwise destined to be discarded.
